MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) — Girls can now officially join the Boy Scouts. As of Friday, they can join what is now called Scouts BSA. More than 77,000 girls have joined Cub Scouts, a program for younger children, since 2018. Now, a Mobile girl is breaking barriers. Catie Simpson is one of the first local girls to become a boy scout. “It’s fascinating to be able to carry on the legacy of scouting, but not just for boys, but for the girls in the 21st century,”

said Catie Simpson. 16-year-old Catie Simpson is making history as one of the first three girls in Mobile to join Scouts BSA. “I always wanted to do it, and it was just something that wasn’t possible for a long time,” said Simpson. Growing up, Catie watched her brother and father achieve higher and higher ranks as boy scouts. Her dad, Charlie Simpson, is an Assistant Scout Master and says he’s happy his daughter’s dreams are becoming a reality.

“It was never anything Catie could do. There wasn’t an avenue, but now that there is, it’s fascinating to experience some of those things,” he said.

Memories are already being made. For Simpson, putting on the uniform is very special, knowing the organization has come together as one.

“It’s probably unlike any other experience because there is a lot of weight to wear it. There is a lot of respect that you have for the uniform. Every piece means something,” she said.

The decision is controversial. There are just two troops in our area– one in Mobile and one in Daphne that currently allow girls.

“At first, we thought the boys would be like ‘we don’t understand what’s going on,’ but they’ve been very receptive. They like it; they get along,” said Simpson.

Simpson says the scout’s mission is to teach kids to work together regardless of gender.

“Our program has been one of the best youth development programs around for a long time, but we really only focused on 50 percent of the youth. So now that everyone can be involved, spread that information and develop youth and hopefully impact our country,” he said.

They’re encouraging more female teenagers to join. “If you are worried about starting it, don’t even worry about it because everybody is a community here, and we are all supportive,” said Catie.
